Is
support from the wider community (eg police, bus companies,
outside agencies) important?
Key statement
Increasingly, schools
are recognising that working with outside agencies can be
a valuable part of their anti-bullying programmes.

Comment
Many episodes of bullying
happen partly in school and partly in the community. It
is important, therefore, that agencies such as the police
and social services, which work in the community, co-operate
with schools to find a solution.
Work by Olweus (see
his book 'Bullying
at School: what we know and what we can do' which was
published by Blackwell in 1993) and others suggests that
families can influence the likelihood of a child becoming
involved in bullying, either as victim or bully. Outside
agencies can work with schools to help families think about
links between parenting and bullying.
